What are immunizations?

Vaccines (also known as immunizations) help prevent people from getting sick. They also help reduce the spread of disease to others and prevent epidemics.

There are many kinds of vaccines. Each vaccine is made up of parts of weakened or killed bacteria or viruses of a specific disease.

After you have a vaccine, your body's immune system will make antibodies to fight the disease. If you are exposed to the same disease in the future, the antibodies kill the bacteria or viruses before they have a chance to make you sick.

Although getting a vaccine may not completely prevent you from getting a disease, it does make it much less likely. And if you get a disease even after you have been vaccinated, it usually will be only a mild case.

Get active

Fitness means being able to perform physical activity. It also means having the energy and strength to feel as good as possible. Getting more fit, even a little bit, can improve your health.

You don't have to be an athlete to be fit. A brisk half-hour walk every day can help you reach a good level of fitness. And if this is hard for you, you can work toward a level of fitness that helps you feel better and have more energy.

Why don't you exercise? For a few days or a week, write down your reasons for not exercising. Then for each of your reasons, write a response that prompts you to reconsider your choice. Look at this list of reasons and responses whenever you are about to make a choice about exercising.
